Silkie
Overview
Silkies are unlike any other chicken — they look like fluffy stuffed animals with their hair-like feathers, black skin, blue earlobes, and five toes (most chickens have four). Originally from China, they've been prized for centuries as ornamental birds and exceptional mothers. Their feathers lack the barbicels that hold normal feathers together, giving them their distinctive fur-like appearance.
As pets, Silkies are unmatched. They're incredibly docile, love being held, and will happily sit in your lap. Children adore them. They're also the best broody hens in the chicken world — many keepers keep Silkies specifically to hatch eggs from other breeds that won't sit on their own. A broody Silkie will adopt and raise almost anything, including duck and turkey eggs.
The downside is that Silkies are terrible layers (about 100 small cream eggs per year) and their unique feathers aren't waterproof, so they need a dry, sheltered coop. They can't fly at all and are vulnerable to predators due to their poor eyesight (head fluff blocks their vision) and small size. Think of them as pets that occasionally produce eggs, not as egg producers.
