Overview

The Australorp holds the world record for egg laying — a single hen laid 364 eggs in 365 days in the 1920s. Developed in Australia from Black Orpingtons, they were bred specifically for maximum egg production while retaining the Orpington's gentle temperament. Their jet-black plumage shimmers with an iridescent green and purple sheen in sunlight, making them surprisingly beautiful birds.

Australorps are the quiet achievers of the chicken world. They lay around 250 large brown eggs per year, handle both heat and cold well, and rarely cause drama in the coop. They're calm, friendly birds that are easy to handle but not as needy or lap-chicken-like as Orpingtons. Their low broodiness means they stay productive almost year-round.

If the Rhode Island Red is the most popular American backyard chicken, the Australorp is its Australian equivalent — and arguably the better layer. They're an excellent choice for anyone who wants high egg production, a calm temperament, and a bird that's genuinely beautiful to look at.

Pros

  • Among the highest egg production of any heritage breed (250+/year)
  • Beautiful iridescent black plumage with green/purple sheen
  • Handles both hot and cold climates exceptionally well
  • Calm and gentle without being overly needy
  • Low broodiness keeps production consistent

Cons

  • Black plumage absorbs heat — need shade access in very hot climates
  • Can be shy and submissive in mixed flocks with aggressive breeds
  • Not as widely available as Rhode Island Reds or Leghorns
  • Heavier than production breeds, so slightly higher feed costs
  • Plain solid-black color may not appeal to those wanting variety
